Jones County placed under burn ban

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

This is a news release from the Jones County Fire Council. 

After brush and woods fires have swept through the area, Jones County has officially been added to the ever-increasing list of Burn Ban locations in Mississippi.

As of 5:09 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, Jones County is under a Burn Ban, which means absolutely no burning outside.

This includes but is not limited to, brush piles, grass, leaves, trash, camp fires, and wooded areas.

The Jones County Sheriff's Department will be enforcing the Burn Ban.

According to the Mississippi Forestry Commission, "Any person who knowingly and willfully violates a burning ban is guilty of a misdemeanor and may be fined not less than $100 and not more than $500.  Section 49-19-351 of MS Code of 1972, as amended. Burn bans are enforced by the local Sheriff's Department."

The Burn Ban will remain in effect until further notice.

    The University of Southern Mississippi ended Saturday’s regular-season baseball finale at Marshall University the same way it started, with a bang. The 18th-ranked Golden Eagles sent 13 batters to the plate in both the second and ninth innings, scoring eight runs in each, as USM finished off a first-ever sweep of the Thundering Herd on its home turf with a 18-9 victory at Epling Stadium.

    A man is recovering from injuries after he claims he was beaten by officers with the Laurel Police Department. Thirty-six-year-old James Barnett indicated the incident took place on Tuesday, May 15.
