HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A ceremony in officially named a section of the Longleaf Trace after Mayor Johnny DuPree in Hattiesburg Tuesday.

It will include the area just west of Highway 49 all the way down to Main Street.

Mayor DuPree was instrumental in the development of the Rails To Trails project.

“It's probably one of the greatest honors that I've ever had besides having children and grandchildren being named after me,” DuPree said. “I mean, this is phenomenal, you know, we've been involved in this since 1993, well over 25 years, I mean, it's one of the greatest things that I've been involved with since I've been in politics.”

The Rails To Trails project in Hattiesburg was officially born in 1994 in an effort to convert old rail lines into recreational trails.
