HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A Hattiesburg family is reaching out to all firefighters to help lift their sick daughter's spirits.
Karen and Robert Waller have been in and out of hospitals with their daughter Vickie for over a year. Doctors have diagnosed Vickie with severe atopic dermatitis, which is a severe case of eczema.
According to Vickie's YouCaring page, her health has been declining since October 2015. In the last month, Vickie has lost weight, had trouble walking, and shakes uncontrollably.
Robert said Vickie has loved firemen and firetrucks ever since she was little. They hope hearing from them will encourage her during her recovery.
Vickie was discharged from Batson Children's hospital Tuesday night, but her father says the recovery will be hard. Doctors told them that she will need to go back for treatment every two weeks, and is undergoing several extensive allergy tests.
Robert said they have received messages on Facebook from firefighters all over the world.
The Hattiesburg Fire Department stopped by Vickie's house Wednesday and delivered her toy firetrucks and her very own firefighter helmet.
Lamar County and Petal Fire Departments are also planning surprises for her. The Laurel Fire Department is scheduling a tour for her when she is better.
Brian also said that the Mississippi Fire Academy sent her a video last night that she has watched several times.
If you know of a firefighter who would like to mail Vickie a card or autograph, have them address their letters to Vickie Waller at 121 W. Park Dr. #111 Hattiesburg, MS 39402.
