Nick Mullens, Allenzae Staggers a Record-breaking Tandem

HATTIESBURG, MS - "It's fun out there, it's fun playing," said Southern Miss senior quarterback Nick Mullens following his team's 44-28 win over Rice. "They were playing a little bit up tight so we knew we would have some opportunities. It's just a matter of connecting on those opportunities and we did. I just kind of throw it up there and let 'em go get it."

It seemed that simple for Nick Mullens and junior wide receiver Allenzae Staggers Saturday night. The two connected for three touchdowns in USM's win over Rice, all of which went for at least 75 yards.

And of Mullens' 591 passing yards, 292 went to Staggers - both Southern Miss single-game records.

"After the third touchdown to Stagg [Staggers], he was like, 'you know where you're at right now?" Mullens said. "I said, 'No, no, no. Don't matter."

"Nick pushes me every day at practice," Staggers said. "'Let's go Stagg, I believe in you.' He finally trusted in me tonight and I had to help him out."

It hasn't taken long for Staggers, one of the many East Mississippi Community College products, to develop chemistry with Mullens in just his first season with USM.

Of course, some of that can be attributed to Mullens, undeniably the leader of the Golden Eagles with a luxury of offensive weapons at his disposal.

"It was great to see Nick open his arm up and show what we've been waiting on all year," said Southern Miss senior defensive end Dylan Bradley. "Today I told Nick before the game, we follow you. We play off how you play. And today he let loose."

"I like to think if I play well, the team plays well and we all play together," Mullens said. "The biggest thing for me is just going out and having fun. Coach [Shannon] Dawson always tells me, 'You can't make every play. Don't be greedy.' Just do your job, really. And I think that's kind of simplified things for me."

"It's a scary sight," Staggers said. "We have a lot of weapons so you don't know who to key on. Like I said, we're on the verge of being unstoppable."
