HATTIESBURG, MS -

Southern Miss will honor the 1996 Golden Eagles, the first team to compete in Conference USA, before its home game against Rice on Saturday night.

Southern Miss finished 8-3 in that inaugural C-USA season, notching a win over Georgia and going 4-1 in the conference which made them co-champions with Houston.

The Cougars won the head-to-head against the Golden Eagles which allowed them the invitation to the 1996 Liberty Bowl.

Lee Roberts, who now calls Southern Miss games on the radio alongside John Cox, took over at quarterback for the Golden Eagles in mid-season of that ’96 season.

Roberts looks forward to tomorrow’s reunion by looking back 20 years ago.
