Hub City assault suspect turns himself in

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The man being sought for a broad daylight assault in The Hub City turned himself into police Friday morning.

According to Hattiesburg Police Public Information Officer Lt. Jon Traxler, Artavias McGowan, 25,  was arrested and charged with aggravated assault in connection to the Sept. 17th assault on West 4th Street.

He is currently being housed in the Forrest County Jail where he is awaiting his initial appearance.

The investigation is ongoing and at least one other suspect is believed to be involved in the crime,according to police.

The assault: 

According to Lt. Jon Traxler with HPD, around 12:30 p.m. on September 17 officers were dispatched to the 2400 block of West 4th St in reference to an assault and theft. 

When they arrived, they located a victim who said he was walking through the parking lot when he was approached and assaulted. 

The victim told police that the suspect took his cellphone and fled. According to the victim's sister Karen Meinershagen, her brother is out of the hospital but has multiple facial fractures including a broken nose. He will need multiple surgeries.

    Hattiesburg police are investigating a weekend assault.  According to Lt. Jon Traxler with HPD, around 12:30 p.m. officers were disptached to the 2400 block of West 4th St in reference to an assault and theft.
