Southern Miss looks to fix mistakes ahead of C-USA play

HATTIESBURG, MS -

“One thing is, you got to get over a loss,” said Southern Miss head coach Jay Hopson on Monday afternoon. “That’s the reality of football. But you have to learn from it.”

After seeing their mistakes on film, the Golden Eagles don’t call Saturday’s loss a wake up call, necessarily. But it was a humbling experience for Southern Miss.

“I thought we won two games and some people walked around here like they had things figured out, like this is easy,” said Southern Miss offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson. “Well it’s not easy. And the bottom line is, we’ve won two games and our opponents are going to get tougher.”

Dawson very candid Monday afternoon saying the offense’s miscues on Saturday all comes back to the way the Golden Eagles practice. And with conference play starting this week, Southern Miss has to get it right.

“We can pinpoint things throughout the week,” Dawson said. “We can pinpoint things, glaring things that led up to this.”

“Mistakes or errors that you make, they kind of amplify up a little bit in a loss,” Hopson said. “Sometimes when you win, you can kind of cruise through it. But I think one thing, it becomes so evident when you look at them in losses. So you learn a lot more.”

“For myself, I’m angry,” said Southern Miss senior defensive lineman Dylan Bradley. “I’m kind of upset about the performance we put out there on the field, on tape. I know, me and Jabari [Poole] said, ‘We’re not going to let that happen again. Even if we have to play every snap of the game, we’re not letting that happen again.’”

Senior Dylan Bradley referencing the struggles the Southern Miss defense had tackling, and with Conference USA’s leading rusher Aaron Jones of UTEP being the next back they face, the nasty bunch has to get nasty again.

“[Jones] hits the whole extremely hard and he has great vision,” said Southern Miss defensive coordinator Tony Pecoraro. “I don’t think it’s anything different that we’ve seen but we just have to come out and definitely know where he is and don’t let him get started.”

“You just have to move forward and put that game behind us because you can’t go back and change the score of that game,” Bradley said. “You can’t go back and wish you could play that game over. We have to come in with this mindset: focus on UTEP.”
