POPLARVILLE, MS (WDAM) - Pearl River Community College is set to begin its inaugural team rodeo season.
The Wildcats rodeo team's first competition starts Thursday, September 22 and continues through the weekend. Rodeo head coach Robby Shaw and his roster of 15 will travel up to Marshall, Missouri to compete against eight different schools including Missouri Valley College, Murray State and East Mississippi Community College.
"It's our first year and we're pretty excited, being able to continue something we've done all through high school and coming to college to compete at the college level," said PRCC sophomore team roper Alex Nobles.
Shaw says he hopes Pearl River's new team will help prosper the already long-standing tradition of rodeo in Poplarville.
Right here local in Poplarville, we have a lot of local talent coming out of the High School Rodeo Association." Shaw said. And they want to stay here local, they don't feel like traveling out of state or out of city. They want to stay home. So we figure we can put together a good team here with local talent."
