HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Hattiesburg police are investigating a weekend assault.

According to Lt. Jon Traxler with HPD, around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday officers were dispatched to the 2400 block of West 4th St in reference to an assault and theft.

When they arrived, they located a victim who said he was walking through the parking lot when he was approached and assaulted.

The victim told police that the suspect took his cellphone and fled.

A Facebook post about the assault went viral Sunday afternoon where a family member of the victim claims the assault was a "hate crime."

According to the victim's sister Karen Meinershagen, her brother is out of the hospital but has multiple facial fractures including a broken nose. He will need multiple surgeries.

Traxler said the investigation is on-going at this time.

If anyone has any information they are asked to call the Hattiesburg Police Department 601-544-7900 or Metro Crime Stoppers 601-582-STOP(7867).
