HATTIESBURG, MS -

"We should've never been in that situation,” said Southern Miss senior quarterback Nick Mullens. “You can't give a team 14 points, whatever we gave them, because that stuff comes back to haunt you. We deserved every bit of what we got."

Southern Miss got away with them in a week one win at Kentucky, but at home against Troy on Saturday, the Golden Eagles fell just one play short of overcoming their early-game mistakes, dropping its first game of the season 31-37 to the Trojans.

"Just a tough game,” said Southern Miss head coach Jay Hopson. It seemed like everything that could've gone wrong did in the first half. Give Troy credit but as a football coach you felt like you shot yourself in the foot a little bit."

The Golden Eagles committed three turnovers and 16 penalties on Saturday. Even though Hopson says he didn't agree with every yellow flag, he knows his team can be better. And with conference play coming up next week, Southern Miss will have to be.

"Football's got to be a fun sport so it's our job to just attack every day, attack every practice and just continue to grow as a team,” Mullens said.

"We just got to be great in practice because you win the game Monday through Friday, Saturday morning,” said Southern Miss junior running back Ito Smith. “So we just got to be better during the week."

"We're 2-1 going into conference play,” said Southern Miss senior defensive lineman Dylan Bradley. “We'll see next week how we respond. But I know the group of guys I got and it’s going to be positive. So conference play, we’ll show y’all next Saturday how we respond to adversity."
