HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Many people in the Pine Belt are taking steps to celebrate a special birthday of a beloved children's book character.

In fact, some will be walking 75 miles.

It is all part of a challenge by University Libraries at Southern Miss to walk 75 miles in eight weeks to commemorate the 75th birthday of Curious George.

The challenge, which began Thursday is called, "Go George Go!"

It will conclude with a community birthday party at the Hattiesburg Zoo on Nov. 12.

"It can be a walk, it can be a run and we have from now until November 12th to walk the 75 miles, one mile per year, to celebrate the curiosity of that very well-known little monkey," said Ellen Ruffin, curator of the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection at USM.

Curious George was created by H.A. and Margaret Rey and he first appeared in books in 1941.

The de Grummond Collection holds the Rey's literary estate.

You can register for the challenge here.

Engineers said portions of Main Street by Mt. Carmel Baptist in Hattiesburg are set to reopen Wednesday. The area has been closed since July after building B of the church was deemed unsafe. Demolition, which cost approximately $334,000, is almost finished, allowing the roads to reopen once the area is cleared.  Portions of 5th Avenue by the church are set to be open sometime next week.  This is a developing story.
