Hattiesburg Fire Department pays powerful tribute to fallen firefighter

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Units with the Hattiesburg Fire Department paid tribute to a fallen Meridian firefighter Wednesday morning.

The funeral procession for Eric Gustafson made its way down Interstate 59 on the way to Metairie, LA for services around 8 a.m.

HFD used several firetrucks to hoist an American flag over the I-59 overpass. The procession drove under it. 

Gustafson lost his life, and two other firefighters were injured when their truck wrecked on the way to a call. 

According to Lt. Jeff Williamson with HFD, their unit decided to put together the tribute the moment they heard about his death. 

"This is a hard job that we do, and we feel like this was something that we needed to," said Williamson. "Our hearts go out to the families."
