HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A group of Hattiesburg Boy Scouts memorialized the 15th anniversary of 9/11 by retiring the American flag.

Troop 90 will burn 24 flags to honor the victims of 9/11 on the Southern Miss campus. Each scout will take a turn dropping part of the flag into the fire pit and then hold a salute until it burns.

Troop Leader Randy Zettle said its important to educate young boys about this important part of history.

"It needs to be remembered," Zettle said. "We cannot forget there were a lot of people from different countries and religions that were killed in that attack."

His son Adam participated and said it's important to honor the people who lost their lives in the tragedy.

"Its the 15th anniversary of 9/11, so we are honoring everyone who is fighting for America," Adam said.

Troop 90 will continue to retire the flag until 8 a.m. on Sunday.
