HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Hattiesburg Fire Department has teamed up with the local chapter of the American Red Cross to help some folks in need.
The group wants to raise awareness about smoke detectors and went into a few neighborhoods in Hattiesburg.
They knocked on doors and asked residents if they might need a new smoke alarm and even helped install them.
Fire Chief Paul Presley stressed the importance of changing the battery in your smoke alarms each year around the daylight savings time period.
Presley said that a smoke detector is your first line of defense in case of a fire in your home.
"Really, anybody is eligible, if they need a smoke detector," Presley said. "If we missed you today give us a call if you need one and we'll try to come by sometime and install one."
Residents can call the American Red Cross or the Hattiesburg Fire Department to ask about getting a free smoke alarm.
