WAYNE COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Nearly one dozen churches and some anonymous donors in Wayne County have done their part to help protect those who keep the community safe.
They raised about $30,000 to buy new ballistic vests and body cameras for Wayne County Sheriff's Department deputies.
The donations came in after newly-elected sheriff Jody Ashley said the equipment was needed.
The money has purchased 14 vests and cameras for the department.
"This shows they care about us by purchasing these vests and I'm honored and humbled that they would do this for us," said Ashley.
"We took some money up and wanted to help (sheriff's deputies) and we're glad that they're safer out there keeping us safe," said Steve Smith, pastor of Waynesboro's First Baptist Church.
Ashley said the Wayne County Board of Supervisors and a federal gr ant also helped them purchase the equipment.
