Inmate breaks leg after attempted escape

JASPER COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - An inmate broke his leg after attempting to escape the Jasper County Jail Sunday afternoon.

Michael Shane Askew was arrested earlier last week for possession and conspiracy to sell a controlled substance.

Authorities responded to a call from a jail guard about a missing inmate at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.

The Jasper County Sheriff Department responded and found the man on the ground outside the jail with a broken leg.

Jasper County Sheriff Randy Johnson said the man climbed up the jail's 12 foot fence, climbed on the roof of the jail and jumped off.

Askew was taken to a hospital in Jackson to get surgery on his leg. He also has cuts on his arms and legs from the fence.

He is charged with escape and could face up to an additional 5 years on his sentence
