MHP Troop J releases Labor Day numbers

PINE BELT (WDAM) -

Pine Belt drivers have been traveling safely this holiday weekend, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol. 

MHP has issued 8,442 citations across the state, and 902 of those were written by Troop J in the Pine Belt.

Brent Barfield, Public information officer with MHP Troop J, said they have issued 605 hazardous citations and 297 non-hazardous citations. 

Across the state there were 170 accidents with 57 injuries and one fatality in Noxubee County in the Starkville District.

Barfield said there were 22 D.U.I. citations, 37 seat belt citations, and two child restraint citations in the Pine Belt.

Troop J has worked 27 wrecks, and three wrecks resulting in injury.

    Engineers said portions of Main Street by Mt. Carmel Baptist in Hattiesburg are set to reopen Wednesday. The area has been closed since July after building B of the church was deemed unsafe. Demolition, which cost approximately $334,000, is almost finished, allowing the roads to reopen once the area is cleared.  Portions of 5th Avenue by the church are set to be open sometime next week.  This is a developing story.     The Oak Grove Senior and Veterans Center held a Monday afternoon Thanksgiving meal filled with comradery and gestures of respect and appreciation.
