New USM design studio to bring more students downtown

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A new studio space on Main Street in Hattiesburg will bring more University of Southern Mississippi students into the downtown area.

The Southern Miss School of Construction's Student Design Studio will give students a new venue to do sketches, make presentations and hear from various speakers.

It is a cooperative effort between USM and the Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association.

"(The students) are going to have some first-hand experience interacting with potential future clients and this is a way to integrate them from the academic world to the practice world," said Erich Connell, director of the School of Construction at USM.

"There's a kitchen space, we've got some couches set up, so we want it to be a creative atmosphere for the students as well, to be able to work together on the projects that they're doing," said Andrea Saffle, executive director of the Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association.

The studio officially opened Friday.
