HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The city of Hattiesburg will hold a community conversation to discuss public safety topics and issues Tuesday night.
The event will kick off at 6 p.m. at the Jackie Dole Community Center and last until 7:30 p.m.
"I guess there is one certain word that capitalizes on all of that, and that is trust," Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree said. "Police have to trust the community, the community has to trust the police department, and each one needs each other for it to survive."
Hattiesburg Police Chief Anthony Parker and Mayor DuPree will be featured in the event, as well as multiple panelists.
- Lt. Jon Traxler: Hattiesburg Police Internal Affairs and PIO
- Lt. Branden McLemore: Hattiesburg Police Detective
- Dr. Rita Porter: Pine Belt Mental Health
- Judge Jerry Evans
- Dr. Wes Johnson: The University of Southern Mississippi
"There is a lot going on across this nation that has to do with police and how the community and police relate to each other, some call it 21st century policing, it's the way of neighborhood policing, community policing," DuPree said. "This is our effort to give the community the opportunity to come and talk to us about how we police, and get the police to talk about how we interact with each other, it's kind of a no-holds bar kind of meeting. Whenever you have an opportunity to talk with each other, you have an opportunity to move forward."
