HATTIESBURG, MS - An Oak Grove teenager had one special request for his 15th birthday celebration Saturday afternoon at Buffalo Wild Wings. Instead of asking for presents, Jay Derhgawen asked his friends to bring donations for Louisiana flood victims..
"Instead of birthday presents, just items like Kleenex, clothes, paper towels," Derhgawen said. "Just helping out."
Dozens of his friends showed up to the party and dropped off several items.
"I think it's really nice of him just to be able to use an event like his birthday to help other people," said his friend Dylan McClain.
Jay plans on taking the donations to Baton Rouge next Saturday and will visit several shelters in the area.
"Just watching the news and seeing all the houses getting flooded and people not having homes now is very sad," Derhgawen said. "I just want to help them out and watch them get better."
His mother Connie said she was surprised by his birthday request at first but couldn't be more proud of her son.
"He does have a big heart, and I think he enjoys giving and this was just a good opportunity for him," she said.
Buffalo Wild Wings is also accepting donated items and will donate 20 percent of their sales to flood victims.
