COVINGTON COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A multi-million dollar, federally-funded project to improve safety on Highway 49 near Hattiesburg has been delayed.
Southern District Transportation Commissioner Tom King said the start date has been pushed back several months because of problems with locating utilities.
The project will involve adding shoulders to the southbound lane and other work along a 22-mile stretch of the highway, between Mt. Olive and the Forrest County line.
"Keep in mind that highway is an old highway and in some areas, there aren't even any maps of where they are located, so it takes time locating those utilities and safety is our first priority," said King
King said construction was originally set to begin in August, but now, he said it won't begin until late fall.
