BASSFIELD, MS (WDAM) -

This may be the last football season for Bassfield High School. Bassfield is expected to consolidate with Prentiss beginning in the 2017-18 school year as announced in June by the Jefferson Davis County School District realignment plan.

Bassfield and Prentiss will combine to form a new school with a new name and, likely, a higher class division in athletics.

But when the season kicks off, for head coach Lance Mancuso and his Yellowjackets Friday night, it will still be Bassfield football.

“We're going to be Bassfield this year," Mancuso said. "We're not going to concern ourselves with anything. And until they tell us anything different that's who we're going to be and that's who we are."

"We're forever Bassfield," senior running back Ron Thompson said. "So basically what he's saying is don't think we're going to change because it's our last year. We're still going to go bust some heads."

When Bassfield lines up against Seminary, it will be the same football that has brought them four straight class 2A state championships.

But Mancuso knows that Friday night’s rivalry is more than just a game. If this is the last Bassfield-Seminary bout, the Yellowjackets want to make sure they bring home a win to Bassfield.

“You know, this community has just meant so much to me and my family," Mancuso said. "These young men have accepted me into this community. It's extremely special to be able to go out and lead them each Friday night and just represent the entire town and community."

Thompson said, "There's been a lot of talking around town talking about Seminary this, Seminary that. But I don't pay them no attention because I don't have but two words for them: We coming."
