HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Two parents are behind bars in connection to the death of their 7-week-old child. This makes the second infant death investigation in the Pine Belt in less than two weeks.
The 7-week-old was identified as River Ashcraft.
On Tuesday, the baby's godmother, Alexis Fizer, is grieving and said she cannot believe her little godchild is gone forever.
"This is hard man, I still feel like I'm dreaming," Fizer said. "I feel like it's a dream, I can't believe it's real."
However, this nightmare is something Fizer will never wake up from. She received a call early Monday morning that her godchild, River, could not breathe. She quickly rushed over to parents Martina Fillingane and Robert Ashcraft's apartment to check on the baby.
"River had blood on her face and nose, I grabbed River to do CPR but she didn't receive air," Fizer said.
Panicked, Fizer did the only thing she could do: wait for help and pray for a miracle.
"I started praying, I told God if 'you give me the strength to do this I will do it,' and I started giving CPR," Fizer said.
By the time the EMS and Hattiesburg Police Department arrived, it was too late. The tragedy happened at the Rus-tique apartment complex. The police arrested Fillingane and Ashcraft and charged them with felony neglect of a child.
"What could this baby have possibly done wrong at seven weeks that someone would want to harm her?" Fizer said.
Fizer was close friends with the father and would watch the child several times during the week. She said she is still trying to process what happened.
"She was just there laying in my arms, I think I cried more than her mommy and daddy I love that little girl," Fizer said.
