HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Oak Grove head coach Drew Causey had two goals for his Warriors going into their jamboree against Purvis high school on Friday night: Get all three of his quarterbacks reps and avoid any injuries.
Causey accomplished both and should have a better feel for who will start under center for Oak Grove in its season-opener against Warren Central next Friday.
Seniors Max Crawford and Payton Harris, and junior Tanner Slay – the three quarterbacks competing for the Warriors' starting gig – all had opportunities and made plays in Class 6A Oak Grove's 13-6 win over Class 4A Purvis in the Lamar County Jamboree.
Crawford and Harris each threw a touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Kevin Barnett and senior Zach Smith, respectively.
Barnett's grab in the first quarter put Oak Grove up 7-0 early in the scrimmage. Purvis' C.J. Bolar responded in the second quarter with a touchdown reception of his own to pull the Tornadoes within 7-6.
Later in the second, as the clock winded down and the rain began to come down, Harris' bullet to Smith made it a 13-6 contest, which would be the final.
Oak Grove will begin its regular season slate on the road against Warren Central while the Purvis Tornadoes travel to Summit to take on North Pike.
