LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The Laurel Police Department has released its crime stats for the first six months of 2016.
Those numbers show that for the first six months of 2016, crime was down considerably compared to the same period as in 2015.
While crime is down in Laurel, Chief Tyrone Stewart said there is room for improvement but the trend is going in the right direction.
Stewart also said that officers of the Laurel Police Department realize that a decrease in crime statistics does not necessarily minimize the trauma felt by the city's crime victims.
"We do believe that the statistics reflect a positive trend of crime reductions for our citizens," Stewart said, "Through a continued partnership between the department and the community, we hope the trend extends through the remainder of 2016 and into the future."
There were 898 reported crimes by this time in 2015 and currently there have only been 740 reported crimes.
Stewart said that his officers will continue to aggressively patrol the city, but will also continue to be involved in the community.
