HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The following is a news release from The University of Southern Mississippi

The Office of Admissions at The University of Southern Mississippi is ramping up student recruitment efforts with a series of Go Gold Information Nights planned across the state in the coming weeks.

The events are designed to give prospective students and their parents an opportunity to hear from Southern Miss admissions counselors about the admission process; learn what scholarship and financial aid opportunities are available; and visit with representatives from the University’s academic colleges/departments.

The Go Gold Information Nights initiative kicks off at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16 at the Hilton Jackson Hotel in Jackson, Miss. The event is scheduled to conclude at 8 p.m.

“Our goal with the information nights is to bring Southern Miss to prospective students’ backyards, to give them a small taste of what we have to offer them as an individual, and to pique their interest enough that they plan a visit to campus,” said Laurie Benvenutti, Assistant Director for Events and Telecounseling. “When they leave the Go Gold Information Night in their area, we want them to feel like there is a place for them at Southern Miss.”

Benvenutti notes that the recruitment project represents a strategic objective for the Office of Admissions as the University aims to blanket every corner of the state with Southern Miss representatives.

“There are areas of Mississippi that have not been saturated by Southern Miss, and through this recruitment road show we are working to cover the state in Black and Gold from north to south and east to west,” she said. “We’re literally meeting students where they are – in their communities – to show them the endless opportunities that Southern Miss has to offer them.”

Representatives from several departments involved with student affairs at Southern Miss will be on hand for the Go Gold events. These include Office of Admissions, Financial Aid, Residence Life, Honors College, and New Student and Retention Programs.

Other scheduled Go Gold Information Nights include the following:

Sept. 20: 6:30 - 8 p.m. – Hardy Hall, Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, Miss.

Sept. 22: 6:30 – 8 p.m. – Brookhaven High School, Brookhaven, Miss.

Oct. 4: 6:30 – 8 p.m. – Tupelo, Miss., site to be determined.

Oct. 6: 6:30 – 8 p.m. – East Mississippi Electric Power Association Auditorium, Meridian, Miss.

Benvenutti says that alumni support has been instrumental in helping coordinate the Go Gold Information Nights – from securing locations in different territories, to contacting local vendors, to partnering with the Office of Admissions for sponsorship of the events. She stresses that the University’s alumni share in the vision that inspired the comprehensive recruitment initiative.

“We want prospective students to feel like they can come to Southern Miss and accomplish their goals,” said Benvenutti. “We want students and parents to feel like Southern Miss is a safe environment where they can get the personal attention they need while earning an affordable, first-class education.”
