USM begins annual Seats for Soldiers program

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Southern Miss fans can now purchase tickets that can be used by the military in a new program called Seats for Soldiers.

For just $10, one can sponsor a military personnel member from local bases such as Camp Shelby and Keesler Air Force Base to attend a home game at The Rock.

The university wants to bring people in the military people to the stadium to see Southern Miss play football.

"This is one way that we're able to do this through our community outreach, which is the Seats for Soldiers as well as the Charity Challenge,” said Brent Jones, Southern Miss senior associate athletic director for external affairs. “Both of these initiatives bring anywhere between 500 to 1,000 people per game on campus to be able to see Southern Miss (play football)."

He said, “It’s $10, each tickets is then donated to us and we actually match that ticket. So anytime a fan purchases one ticket, we’re actually giving them a ticket as well as a way to say thank you. And talk about how great our fans are. Every time that we ask them to purchase tickets either for the military or charity groups they always step up without hesitation without reservation and they make a difference and that's why we are here."

The school also offers a Charity Challenge where it donate tickets to local non-profits such as Special Olympics and the Boys and Girls Club.

In 2015, over 2,000 tickets were donated by fans.
