HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The city of Hattiesburg and a local retailer hosted a community anti-crime event Tuesday afternoon.

A Night Out Against Crime sidewalk party was held at Target.

Police officers and firefighters met shoppers and free hot dogs were also provided.

National Night Out activities began Tuesday morning with an educational event for senior citizens and wrapped up with individual neighborhood association block parties in the evening.

"This gives an opportunity for neighbors to meet neighbors and that's how you fight crime, neighbors meeting neighbors, knowing what's going on in their communities," said Johnny Dupree, mayor of Hattiesburg.

Later this month, the city will host a community policing event.
