BAY SPRINGS, MS (WDAM) -

The First Pentecostal Church of Bay Springs held a church service honoring policemen for keeping the community safe every day.

Men in blue packed the pews of the church to hear words of encouragement and respect from community leaders.

“We want you guys to know today that we love you," John Bowen said. "We support you. We are praying for you."

At one point, the officers were brought to the front of the church and kids laid their hands on them to pray over them.

“It felt great because God can put a shield around them and protect them,” Jaynia Keyes said.

Bay Springs Police Chief Raymond Delk said praying with the kids was special because it let's children know that the police are there to protect them.

“For the kids to come up and hold a hand give us hand prints it meant everything to us because the kids are the future,” Delk said.

Police officials said this support from the community comes at a perfect time, especially with the recent violence against policemen.

“It builds us up," said Jasper County Sheriff Randy Johnson. "It helps us to know as law enforcement we are appreciated and welcomed in this town."
