LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Hundreds of Jones County children are well-supplied for their first weeks in school, thanks to the Jones County Sheriff's Department and lots of donors.

Saturday, the sheriff's department welcomed families for an annual backpack giveaway at the Old Crocker's on the Hill location.

The packs were full of notebooks and paper and the kids also got free hot dogs and drinks.

"We believe our job is more than locking people up and taking them to jail and so, anything we can do to take pressures off of families and parents, we try to do that," said Alex Hodge, Jones County sheriff.

"This is a great thing that the sheriff has been doing for many years for all the children in the community, because there are some that do not have, so we continue to bring out others and we thank him very much," said Marian Allen, a parent and local minister who brought several children to the giveaway.

This is the ninth year for the school supplies giveaway.
