LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Dixie Electric Power Association gave consumers a crash course on saving energy and money Friday.

It hosted an energy fair at Lowe's in Laurel and was second of three being held this month.

It's also the first year the electric cooperative has set up the fairs at local retailers.

Information on air conditioning and heating, insulation, kitchen appliances and light bulbs was provided.

"Previously, we've done energy fairs in our offices, which has been beneficial, we could show (customers) the materials," said Lydia Walters, human resources and communication manager for Dixie Electric Power Association. "But this is kind of an extra bonus, because they're in the stores where they can go ahead and actually see the products and purchase the products to help them."

"(The information is) good, it's good," said Buddy Stringer, a shopper from Jasper County. "I knew a lot of stuff, but there's a lot of stuff I didn't know."

Next Thursday, another energy fair will be held at Gatlins Building Supply in Waynesboro, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Engineers said portions of Main Street by Mt. Carmel Baptist in Hattiesburg are set to reopen Wednesday. The area has been closed since July after building B of the church was deemed unsafe. Demolition, which cost approximately $334,000, is almost finished, allowing the roads to reopen once the area is cleared.  Portions of 5th Avenue by the church are set to be open sometime next week.  This is a developing story.
