FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

For the first time, a New Orleans church is holding an annual wilderness camp for inner city kids in Forrest County.

Members of Israelite Baptist Church in New Orleans Central City community are at Paul B.Johnson State Park for a 10th anniversary summer camp,

It includes swimming, fishing, softball and other outdoor activities.

Organizers started the camps to give underprivileged kids a chance to get away from some of the problems of big city life.

"In the city, all they hear is sirens and gunshots, so it's important that we get them in a serene place, where they can look around and see the environment and know that there is something more than brick and mortar," said Rev. Emanuel Smith, Jr., pastor of Israelite Baptist Church and founder of the camp.

The campers will be at the park until Friday.
