HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Concerns of increased gang activity in The Hub City have been circulating on social media, and local law enforcement are weighing in.

Online rumors claim more than 500 gang members are going to be present in Hattiesburg Saturday, and urge citizens to stay home. 

Hattiesburg police issued the following statement on their Facebook page Saturday afternoon: 

Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel and Maj. Brad Weathers also issued similar statements on their Facebook pages:

The validity of the posts in question are not confirmed, but residents are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police. Do not go into any dangerous areas. 

Both Hattiesburg police and Lamar County sheriff's will be patrolling the area tonight, as usual. 

Residents are urged to use their best judgment when traveling around the area tonight.

    Fans were waiting in the parking lot Wednesday outside Hattiesburg High School for tickets to go on sale for the 5A South State Championship Friday night. The Tigers are hosting the Laurel Tornadoes in a I-59 showdown.  The game, a repeat of the "Lil' Brown Jug" game will give the Tornadoes the chance at revenge, after Hattiesburg won the rivalry game 20-14 in August.
