FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Emergency crews were on scene of a drowning just off Sims Road at the Leaf River Bridge in Forrest County Thursday night.

The Forrest County Sheriff Dive Team located a body in the Leaf River. According to officials, the victim is a 21-year-old man.

Forrest County Sheriff's Department got a call from a fisherman that had launched his boat Thursday afternoon.

"When he called, he said there was a bicycle, cellphone, tennis shoes and stuff in the middle of the boat ramp, he didn't think much of it and went fishing for a while," Forrest County Emergency Management Director Glen Moore said. "When the fisherman came back, the stuff was still there and that's when emergency crews responded."

Moore added that they were able to contact family from the license information left in the wallet on the boat ramp.

"Family said they had not seen him in the last 24 hours," Moore said. "We flew Rescue 7 down the river to see if we could spot him, and then Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries used sonar and located the body."

Members of the Forrest County Sheriff's Department Diver team located recovered the body around 8:30 p.m.

The victim's name is not being released pending notification of next of kin.

The WDAM First Alert Weather Team has enacted a First Alert Weather Day for the Pine Belt due to extreme heat this afternoon. This morning is not too bad as we start out with temperatures in the mid 70s, but this afternoon is going to be awful. The heat will get an early start as temperature reach the 90s before lunchtime. The humidity will make it feel more like the low 100s around that time frame but it doesn't stop there. Temperatures will continue to rise into the afternoon as hi...
