LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The city of Laurel is seeing major growth with new businesses coming to the downtown area.
New businesses recently opened on June 30 like furniture store J. Parker and Adam Trest Home, which creates custom designs.
Laurel Chamber of Commerce Vice President Larkin Simpson said these new businesses are boosting the city's economy.
"There's a lots more for them to do so that's going to be great for the city's growth along with the economy more money coming and being spent in town," Simpson said.
Businesses like "Sweet Something's" bakery decided to relocate from Ellisville to take advantage of the growing population in the city.
"We decided to grow or stop because we got so busy that we couldn't keep up so laurel kept pulling me here," Bakery owner Jamie Suggs said.
Simpson said the publicity from "HGTV" and the "Free state of Jones" movie helped jump start this growth.
"We've been calling the big three the HGTV show that's aired, the World Series that's coming up and the movie that's coming out," Simpson said. "A lot of folks are using this as a great opportunity to start their own business and to set up shopping in Jones county and Laurel."
Business owners like Jacqueline Parker agree and said moving downtown was a great decision.
"Business has been great the support of the community, we have traffic every day, every day," Parker said.
