Mullens, Smith named to Maxwell watch list

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Two University of Southern Mississippi football players received some national love today.

Senior quarterback Nick Mullens and junior running back Ito Smith were selected to the Maxwell Award watch list.

The Maxwell award is given to the best college football player in the nation every year. The list was comprised of 90 players.

Mullens is coming off a stellar 2015 campaign that saw him throw for a school record 4,476 yards. He also set program marks with 38 touchdowns, 331 completions, a 155.16 passing efficiency rate and 4,384 yards of total offense.

Smith led the Golden Eagles in rushing with 1,128 yards along with 10 scores. He added 49 receptions for 515 yards.

Maxwell award semifinalists will be announced October 31. This list will be trimmed to a final three on November 21, with the winner being announced December 8.

    A two-vehicle crash in Forrest County injured two people Thursday afternoon. The accident happened around 3:45 p.m. on Highway 11 near Mak's gas station, according to state troopers on the scene.  Emergency crews transported one person to a hospital via ambulance. State troopers said the jaws of life were used to free one person from the wreckage.  The Moselle Fire Department and the Forrest County Sheriff's Office responded to the wreck.  Copyright W...More >>

    Christian Food Mission is set to debut their new facility and location Thursday during a ribbon cutting and open house.  Jones County Chamber of Commerce Prior to moving to 2507 Moose Drive, the building sat at 506 Chantilly Street. Since December 25, 1982, the organization has served meals to the needy in Jones County.
