HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Lots of folks like to shoot fireworks on the Fourth of July, but in some places they legally cannot.

Hattiesburg police are reminding people in town that it is against the law to shoot fireworks inside the city limits of Hattiesburg.

Police suggest for people to take their fireworks out into the countryside.

“There is a law against it, so we can seize the fireworks and turn them in as evidence and you can be issued a citation," Hattiesburg Police Lt. Jon Traxler said. "I think the fine on that is a little over $250 dollars here with the city of Hattiesburg,”

Officials said one reason for the restriction in the city is to cut the risk of accidentally setting fire to something.

“Again use extreme caution, if you decide to take that chance just be mindful that there is the possibility that you could get arrested for it or be issued a citation,” Traxler said.
