HPD gets new wheels for bike patrol

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Hattiesburg Police Department has added some new two-wheeled transportation to its patrol fleet.

Six bicycles have been purchased for a cost of $4,400.

They will be put into service after officers go through several hours of required training.

They will be used to patrol the Longleaf Trace and will also be used for parades, sporting events and other community gatherings.

"(The training) will teach them how to use themselves to be able to maneuver it better, be able to maneuver through traffic, go up and down stairs, hills, things like that," said Lt. Jon Traxler with the Hattiesburg Police Department. "The class is a 32-hour class and it'll start next week."

The bikes are ATX models made by Giant.
