Early reviews coming in for 'Free State of Jones' movie

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Movie critics are starting to voice their opinions on the highly-anticipated film "Free State of Jones."

The film stars Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey, and tells the story of Newt Knight, a Confederate deserter, who led a rebellion against the Confederacy during the Civil War.

The popular movie review website Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 33 percent rating with an average rating of 5.3 out of 10.

Ty Burr with the Boston Globe said,

""Free State of Jones" is a deeply strange movie, but that's fine — so is the history on which it's based."

Richard Roeper with the Chicago Sun-Times said the premise of the movie was debatable, but was brilliantly executed.

Many critics praised the film's interpretation of Knight's history; however, some critics were less than thrilled with the movie's overall message.

Jordan Goffman with The Guardian said,

"The Free State of Jones is an anti-war film with a commie message that still glamorizes southern pride, hard work and the Good Book."
