Richton family wants neglected cemetery maintained properly

PERRY COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Some people in Richton are upset over the condition of an old cemetery and they want somebody to do something about it.

The Husband family said an old, overgrown cemetery near Thompson Creek has mostly African-American graves that go back to the 1800s.

Nearby is another newer cemetery, which is also majority African-American, and they said it has also been neglected.

They said Sunset Cemetery, which is mostly white, is much better maintained.

"We want to see it brought up to par," Carderro Husband said. "We would like to see adequate roads to the cemetery."

"It's not about politics, it's about doing the right thing," Alvin Husband said. "It will not be tolerated, we will do something and we will take it as far as it's needed to make sure that this thing is rectified."

Alvin Husband and Richton Mayor Bo Ruffin went to the old cemetery Tuesday. Husband said the mayor seemed to be sympathetic to his concerns.

Ruffin did not respond to our calls for a comment.
