LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee is taking a dim view of a proposed tax exemption that a local business wants.
Wayne Farms is asking the city for a tax break of nearly $9 million over a decade.
This comes after the poultry company laid off more than 300 workers.
"I don't feel that as the mayor of the city, that Laurel will be getting a fair shake by exempting this amount for ten years while we have so many people out of work," Magee said. "It's difficult to vote on the tax exemption in the same month that the major layoff happened."
Magee said Laurel is business friendly, but he also wants to look out for the people and the taxpayers.
