USM summer theatre camp to perform 'Space Pirates'

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Midsummer Musical Theatre Experience is underway at The University of Southern Mississippi.

The annual camp, which has been open for 12 summers, hosts young actors 8 to 15 years old.

This year's production is "Space Pirates!" which was the 2015 winner of the Children's Musical Theatre Festival in New York City.

Some of the young actors are excited about performing in "Space Pirates!"
"I think it's really fun because they're aliens, pirates, and humans," said 8-year-old young actor Isabelle Wilkes. "I just think that all of that mix comes together and makes a really good fairytale."

Camp Director Robin Aronson said, "I just love to see young people open up, become less shy, get motor skills, singing, dancing, acting, become someone else, have some make up, put on a costume, and just have a great summer."

Camp Supervisor Stuart Rial said he makes it his job to encourage the kids to keep going and pursue whatever they want to do.

"If it's musical theatre, that's great, but anything you want to do then go for it," Rial said.
Admission is only $5 at the door.

Show times will take place Friday, June 17, at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the Woods Theatre and the USM Theatre and Dancing Building.
