HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The attack on an Orlando nightclub is still on the minds of many people, and investigators are still working to piece together a horrific event.
But since the attack, people have begun to hear the term "soft target."
A soft target is anyone in large group of people at a minimally guarded area. This includes festivals, concerts, sporting events, schools, churches and hospitals.
"Usually it's unprotected or there's vulnerabilities attached to the environment, so it makes it easier for people who want to do harm to infiltrate that particular environment," NCS4 Director Lou Marciani said.
Experts said it is important to stay aware of your surroundings when in large groups.
"It's about situational awareness and speaking up when something's wrong," Marciani said.
The slogan "See Something, Say Something" became common after the September 2001 terror attacks, but the phrase remains important in today's society.
"'See Something, Say Something' and social media are both great tools," Marciani said.
Twitter, Facebook, and Snapchat have all been helpful in stopping people from carrying out attacks.
"Any time there's suspicious activity, we're notified. It may be me or the local business man, and we're leading toward the modern trending environment through social media," Marciani said.
