PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

Heartbreak struck the Petal Panther’s last season as they saw their dream of becoming 2015 State Champions slip away to Starkville, but they have already started back down the road to Oxford.

Head Coach Marcus Boyles said, “They had a really good spring and then to build off that this summer and be in really good shape and really focused going into August.”

“I think we’ve got a really good chance to have a good team if we can stay injury free and play hard,” Boyles said.

Luckily Coach Boyles already has a strong returning group of players.

“I think this year we’ve got a strong base, we’ve got some holes to fill and we need to find some depth in some certain places,” Boyles said. “That’s a big thing, not a lot of depth on the O-line. We’ve got to find some guys there that will step up and be ready to play.

Another major hole the Panther’s look to fill is the quarterback spot after graduating starter Samuel Hopper.

“Tanner Estill and Jordan Wilson, an upcoming junior, those two guys will battle it out this summer and the best guy will win,” Boyles said in regards to the open QB position.

With offensive key Stephon Huderson back in the mix, the Red and Black are set up for success.

“The guys are working hard and they are really focused right now,” Boyles said.
