LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - NFL athlete and former Laurel football star, Akeem Davis, held his free of charge football camp Saturday for kids in the surrounding area, but this camp is about more than football fundamentals.
Akeem Davis said, "I grew up in the same streets these kids grew up in and I know the obstacles they face on a daily basis and the Lord blessed me to play in the national football league and that's a lot of these kids goals as well. We want to make sure we do everything we can, not as an athlete but as a person to help them make it to that next level."
The AD 47 Football Leadership Academy held 'Between the Bricks' at Laurel High School began in 2015 with 53 participants. In the camps second year the camp doubled in size reaching 100 campers.
Camper Pedro Perez said, "Well I just love to come out here and work with Akeem because he's my favorite NFL player and it was my dream to meet him and my dream came true."
"Hopefully this thing lasts for 10 to 25 years because we've got guys coming up behind me to make sure that this legacy continues," Davis said.
This free half day clinic for ages 8-12 is built on 4 pillars. Character, leadership, discipline and follow through.
"You don't have to be from Laurel because at the end of the day we're all on the same team. We just want to be successful and that's what inspired me and gave me the motivation and the passion to pursue this," Davis said.
