LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The Joe D. Hudgies American Legion Post 210 in Laurel hosted a Memorial Day program Saturday night.
Several people gathered together to enjoy food, live music and speeches about the importance of Memorial Day weekend. Mayor Johnny Magee and State Sen. Juan Barnet also attended the program to discuss the holiday's significance.
"It's important also to recognize that black soldiers played a very major part in the freedom of this country," Magee said.
Post Commander Kevin Williams said he is excited by how many people decided to come out to the post to honor the military.
"What kind of country would we be to not remember the fallen soldiers," Williams said.
Barnett spoke at the event and said it's important to remember the family members who lost loved ones that served the country.
"Don't only remember those who are fallen but any opportunity that you have and know someone who lost a family member," Barnett said. "Stop by and just tell them thank you for sharing your loved one with us."
The post also presented the colors and a musician played TAPS.
