HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A Hattiesburg veterans organization teamed up with cadets from the National Guard's Youth Challenge program Saturday to honor veterans on Memorial Day weekend.
Members of VFW Post 3036 and some cadets placed American flags on the graves of veterans at Highland cemetery.
After each flag was placed, a salute was given.
The two organizations have been working together to honor veterans in this way since 2004.
"It's soldiers in the past, airmen, Marines, its a tradition," said Louis George, commander of VFW Post 3036. "Our country is where it is today because of men and women like this."
"I feel like it's helpful to them, giving back to them, because of how they helped our country, to show a lot of thanks to them," said Salvario Napier, a cadet from Wayne County.
The two groups also placed flags on veterans' graves at Roseland Park Cemetery.
