HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Golden Eagles got off to a hot start posting three runs in the first inning against Marshall's one, but then the bat's went cold.
The scores remained the same until the bottom of the eight inning when Marshall scored off a Bird single. Even with the added run, it wasn't enough to bring them to the championship round, and Southern Miss remained undefeated.
"I wouldn't have thought three runs in the first inning would be enough to win the game, but we did," said USM baseball coach Scott Berry.
"If the offense doesn't show up, which it's not going to every day, then you gotta be able to play those other two parts of the game, the pitching and the defense," he added. "They've gotta show up, and today they really did."
Berry remained optimistic about the championship game, especially staying undefeated in this year's tournament.
"It's gonna be no different than today's game," Berry said. "We gotta game to play. Let's go out and play hard."
Catch the final game Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Golden Eagles face off against Rice.
