Marion County encampment to showcase life in 19th century Mississippi

MARION COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Dozens of re-enactors are gathering in Marion County Saturday to showcase what life was like in 19th century South Mississippi.

An encampment at the John Ford Home in Sandy Hook will feature War of 1812 and Civil War re-enactors, as well as Mississippi frontier and Native-American exhibits.

The Marion County Historical Society is hosting the event.

"A lot of important events took place in that area and lot of people just aren't familiar with them, so it's kind of neat sharing that with people," said Drew Turner, one of the frontier re-enactors who will be participating in the encampment.

"We just want people to take away from this an appreciation for the history of Marion County and what everybody went through back then," said Rachel Baker, a member of the Marion County Historical Society.

Artillery demonstrations are also scheduled, along with a Ladies Tea and Fashion Show.
