PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Memorial weekend will be filled with barbecues, beaches and fun in the sun, but many dermatologist recommend investing in sunscreen.
"It's very important to wear sunscreen because the sun no matter what your skin type, whether you're light or very dark can cause damage," Dr. David Roy of Pine Belt Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center in Petal said.
Roy said sunscreen brands are a personal choice and that the difference between popular and generic brands is price.
"Whatever you're looking for, make sure it says sunscreen, make sure it says broad spectrum, and make sure it says water resistance," Roy said.
He said sunscreens should be SPF 30 or higher. He explained how to apply sunscreen properly.
"So you apply a couple of pea size amounts about two inches apart and then you just rub it in and it will cover a much larger area and you use a lot less sun block," Roy said.
All exposed parts of the body should be covered.
"Make sure you get your lips, the top of your head, get your ears covered, make sure you get your nose, make sure you get your hands and the palms of your hands," Roy said.
Roy recommends reapplying sunscreen every 80 minutes.
